Remember Derek Gagnier

Derek at Priory

Derek 2013

When did you attend Priory

How did you locate the Priory website?

Who were your most memorable teachers?

Mr. McKenzie was a cool guy. I also liked Ms. Smallwood. She was quirky but in a good way.

Who were your best friends at Priory?

DJ Tiemens, Geir Finnerud, Kathy Ridley, Sandi Keiffer, Marcus Handal, Laurel McIntosh, Sean Khouri, Eduardo (don't remember his last name), and Eugene Miller. Javier Ramirez

Who are you in touch with today?

DJ, Geir, Kathy, Sandi, Laurel and Sean.

Who would you like to track down?

Gavin Johnson was a really nice guy but I didn't know him well. Eugene Miller was great. He, DJ & I used to get into a lot of mischief together - many, many laughs! Also, I'd love to know what Raquel Pusey is up to. She was always really nice. Also, Gavin Johnson, Richard Weir, and Mark Younis. I didn't know Mark or Gavin very well but they seemed like good guys. Lastly, I'd love to know about the current lives of Julie Hanna and Lisa Hopkinson, also really great people. There are a few other people that I recognize from the Priory site and remember fondly but I can't remember their names.

What was the wildest thing you ever did at Priory?

Oh, I'm not sure I can say!

What memories/views do you have of Priory?

I had nothing against Priory as a school and I liked it as much as I could like any school at that point but I was really tired of school by that point and not into it. I couldn't wait to break free, get a job, and carve out my own independence!

Who was the craziest person during your time at Priory?

Oh, I'd say DJ for sure! He was a total character and he still is!

Where do you live and what do you do nowadays?

Vancouver, British Columbia. I am the Human Resources Manager for the Department of Physics and Astronomy  at the University of British Columbia.

Derek’s parents, Bob and Wellner Gagnier, in 2007, enjoying Wellner’s birthday flowers. Wellner taught enrichment classes at The Priory.

These pictures were taken this summer (2007) at Bluewater Cottage ( on Bowen Island, which is located just off the coast of Vancouver.

Our old friends, Kari and Darren joined us on the trip as well, and it was a lot of fun!

Tell us about any significant others

I live with my partner, Mark Peterson. We have been together for close to 12 years and our dog, Buddy (German Shepherd/Border Collie cross) who we're crazy about.

Tell us about your most unusual meeting with a Priory person

DJ Tiemens and I only just re-connected with Geir Finnerud who lives in his native Norway. We definitely plan to reunite when we have the opportunity. It felt really great to re-connect. I did have a LOT of fun during my Kingston days and remember them very fondly!

What do you think of the Priory Website?

I’d like to extend my deepest thanks to Stephen Smith for all of his efforts in putting together and maintaining such a fantastic site. I feel like the site enables me to stay connected with that very special time and place in my life.
