Remember Debby Parris?
Debby and Manel 2005
When did you attend Priory?
Between 1967 and 1972
Who was your most unforgettable teacher?
I was half in love with Mr. Tansey!!
Also loved Mrs. Gregory and my art teacher Valerie Bloomfield who
was such a dedicated teacher and I learnt so much from her; also
admired Mrs. Bourke who managed to interpret TS Eliot (like looking
into a different galaxy and needing an interpreter) and loved Mr.
Bourke’s Current Affairs classes. I also remember a great young
American lady teacher teaching us American history. And my first
day writing a dictation in another American teacher’s class
(geography?); I was very new and every time the teacher said
“period” (blush, blush) I wrote it down, only later discovering that
it meant “full-stop”! Priory was a remarkable school and a very
important part of my life (5 teenage years) was spent there.
Jamaica, too, is lodged in my heart.

Who were your best friends at school?
Jennifer Brand, Tymbi Su Wong, Randy Cargill, Betsy Sullivan, Julia Davidson, Ruth Roberts, Elaine Petriw, Polly Gamble and my brother John. A little group of us used to go for tropical drinks at Devon House when we were in the 6th form. I also remember going to the Prime Minister’s Residence when Manley was voted in. It was, if I remember rightly, next door toPriory.

Who are you in touch with now?
I’ve had e-mails from Polly and Tymbi and I’m so busy that I haven’t kept in touch so far . . . but I will get back to them!
Who would you like to trace if we could?
Just reading people’s news on your excellent site is great! I’d like to know how Jennifer Brand, Randy, Betsy, Julia, Ruth and Elaine are doing.
What's the wildest thing you ever did at Priory?
I’m known to be “earnest” not wild!! But I still remember the April Fool’s day when we carried Mr. Tansy’s Mini into a field and (was it the same year or another year?) when we set up a classroom in a field – chairs, desk, teacher’s desk and waste paper basket!
Who was the craziest person during your time at Priory?
..............used to tell us that he never wore underpants, that it was an old fashioned thing to do; then one day he was demonstrating a high karate kick in the 6th form study room (showing off a bit!!) and his already tight trousers split!!!
(Stephen's note - anyone know who this is?!!!)
Where do you live and what do you do now?
I live in a town called Manlleu (20,000 inhabitants) which is 80 km north of Barcelona, Catalunya, Spain. I taught English as a foreign language for about 25 years in a small English academy which my sister Belinda, Mum and I ran with a Catalan partner called Neus. We closed the school a couple of years ago. Then I worked as a gardener with my husband and now I work for my sister Belinda at her “rural tourism” house near Tavertet, a tiny stone village perched on some high cliffs near here. Our family is vegetarian and we are involved in the animal defence movement and especially in the effort to abolish bull-fighting in Catalunya.

I’ve been married for 23 years to Manel Macià who is from a farming family and is now a gardener. We have two children: Adam is 22 and works with Manel and is an expert in trees and Maria del Mar (Mima) who is 21 and is living at the moment in Costa Rica and has also been working in Nicaragua. She’s returning here soon, at least for a while. We live in an old farm house with three lodgers and a number of other animals!!
What do you think of the Priory site?
I love the website and really admire both the setting up of the site and the incredible job of updating it every week! I’d love to see a map of Kingston and to see where Priory is. Is that possible?
Can anyone pinpoint Priory on here for us?
